Introducing
Christie Sobczak, LCSW
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and I received my Masters degree from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in Richmond, Virginia. I have over 14 years of experience working with adults, adolescents, children, families, and couples. In the past 9 years, I have specialized in working with children, adolescents and their families, while continuing to work with adults and couples.
People seek therapy for many reasons. Some want help with specific emotional problems like depression, anxiety, excessive worry, or stress. Others are trying to come to terms with a personal history of abuse or trauma. Parents often seek services for their children and adolescents due to behavioral problems or family conflict, which can involve identifying and working through underlying issues.
My clients often want to experience more meaningful relationships with others, gain a greater understanding of themselves, find a sense of fulfillment and meaning in life, increase independence and self-esteem, and resolve longstanding issues that keep them from achieving their desires and goals.
I provide both short term and long term therapy. I primarily use family systems, cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic approaches; however, I use other theoretical approaches as well. I try to understand my clients not only in terms of their current symptoms and stressors, but I also aim to understand my clients’ early childhood experiences, how well they navigated the psychological and emotional developmental stages in their life and how their early relationships and attachments shaped their sense of self and the quality of their relationships.
I have a strong commitment to treating individuals and families who experience a variety of issues including: depression/bipolar disorders, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, trauma and abuse (sexual and physical), dissociation, loss and grief, problems with sense of self, suicidal and self-injurious behaviors, domestic violence, codependency issues, attachment issues, family of origin issues, relationship and marital problems, ADHD, family conflict, behavioral problems in children and adolescents, parenting issues, and the impact of separation, divorce, remarriage, or death on individuals and families. I also have experience working with the special needs of adopted children and their families.
