Introducing Martha Slattery, M.S., EdS., LMFT
Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist
I first became intrigued by the group process back before graduate school . At the time I had the job of managing “employee involvement” - coordinating and leading small groups of folks who would brainstorm ideas for improving their product. The striking thing I first witnessed there is the power that goes far beyond the input from each individual. Ideas build on ideas, conflicts surface, and with work, the resolution of such conflicts produces a stronger, more cohesive system. Following this interest led me to graduate school at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, where, in 1990, I earned a Master of Science degree in Group Process and Group Psychotherapy. During that time I completed an internship at Jersey Shore Medical Center in New Jersey. There I organized and led simple support groups, experiential psychotherapy groups, and developed a program of medication education which included groups for a chronically ill population. In addition I had the pleasure of working with a variety of individual patients as well.
Although my original goal had been to continue with corporate work with my graduate degree, sometime during my time at Jersey Shore I caught the “clinical bug”. Thus, after graduation in 1990, I continued on at Jersey Shore Medical Center and was also invited to teach Group Process at Hahnemann as part of their newly developing program for executives.
From 1991 to 1998, I was fortunate to join the private practice of Dr. Stephen Burns, a psychiatrist in Monmouth County, New Jersey. During that time I earned my Certification as a Biofeedback Therapist (1992) and my Ed.S. degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Seton Hall University (1995). In 1998 I began an independent private practice for Individual, Marriage and Family Therapy and continued to run groups. Presently I am licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in both New Jersey and North Carolina.
I have been extremely fortunate over the years to be able to follow a path of education and employment that has continually allowed me to do the work I love. More recently I have had the good fortune to relocate near family in Raleigh, to have met wonderful new friends, and to find a new “professional home” with Cary Counseling Center.
