Anger Management Counseling for Oriental, Bayboro, New Bern, Grantsboro, &
Arapahoe, Services for Pamlico County, NC
Oriental Counseling Center's director Dr. Bryce Kaye has designed a unique program to deal with problems of raging. Most treatment classes rely on an educational approach to help people avoid "triggering" their rage or to help people evaluate their actions before raging. The problem with relying on education is that it does not change the major source of the problem. Most of the time, people cannot remember educational lessons when they are hyper-aroused and more primitive parts of their brain are activated. Dr. Kaye's method is different: it is designed to reprogram those rageful feelings at their core long before they even reach consciousness. Dr. Kaye uses a very structured protocol designed from his knowledge of psychophysiology, hypnotic processing heuristics, reflexology, and ego state psychotherapy. This protocol focuses on reprogramming the brain so that the rageful feelings are turned off at their core. The result is that most of the clients who have completed his treatment program report feeling relatively calm during conflict.
Dr. Kaye's technique can be more accurately described as "rage reduction" or "conflict inoculation" instead of "anger management." "Anger management" implies that one must cap off anger that is often already overwhelming. Conflict inoculation is a process of reprogramming parts of the unconscious emotional system so that there's no rage to cap off. In other words, there's no great strain or effort required to handle conflict. The emotions are made more comfortable.
The training regimen is highly structured but may vary somewhat from individual to individual. The average course of training looks like the following:
Sessions 1 - 2 Initial evaluation and review of social history
Sessions 3 - 6 Consolidation of positive emotional resources from positive memories and meditation training
Sessions 7 - 10 Strengthening of positive resources via hypnotic techniques and interactive imagery
Sessions 11 - 17 In - session practice using positive resources to recondition emotions in worst-case imagined scenarios
Sessions 18 - 23 At home practice exercises with review of practice logs in session.
Session 24 Final review and closure session
The above outlined course of training requires a fair amount of repetition much like training to play a musical instrument. Performance training cannot occur like educational learning. If you want anger management "classes" in order to merely satisfy a court requirement with minimal effort, then this training is not for you. It does require a fair amount of work. It is more expensive (because of the individual attention required), and will require more personal discomfort in practicing because of more intense emotion. However, if you truly want to improve your interpersonal relationships for the rest of your life, this training regimen is one of the best investments you can make.
